I was looking for a Satoyama (countryside mountains and villages) experience for parents and children.

We had limited time to spend at home during our spring break and were bored. I was looking for a camp-like experience, but especially wanted to find a programme that parents and children could enjoy together. We looked for a place where we could experience Satoyama, as we don’t have many opportunities to get in touch with nature. I wanted to be exposed to elements I don’t usually come into contact with, such as fields, insects and rice paddies.

My fears before joining the programme

I was worried about whether my child would get used to spending time at the host family. However, with the host family’s children and enjoying eating, playing and working in the fields with my son, my child quickly got used to it.

 Stimulated by the new environment

The host families and local people seemed to be used to people like us visiting them, and the children got used to them quickly. As I am not a shy person myself, I was able to interact naturally with my host family and the local people. I had a very stimulating time with people from different backgrounds and perspectives.

There was also a convenience store nearby, and although there were fields around, the environment was comfortable and not too rural.

My daily schedule

I woke up in the morning to the clucking of chickens.

5:30-6:00: Wake up and play with toys in the living room
6:30-7:00: Prepare breakfast with host
6:30 – 7:00: Coffee time
Lunch: events (pizza making and wildflower picking)
Afternoon: flower picking, bug catching, picnic, etc.
After 18:00: Bath and dinner
20:00: Children’s bedtime
22:00: Socialising with hosts

Children’s independence nurtured in nature

It was very much beyond my expectations and I was able to interact with a wide variety of people as there was always someone at this Kobe house. Children from the neighbourhood also came to visit us. So I had the opportunity to try things I normally didn’t do. For example, the child eats more vegetables and he dresses himself. When I was there he did not eat vegetables, but when he saw his host family’s children eating vegetables he started to eat with them. When he came home, he also made great progress, brushing his teeth on his own and putting the dishes back in the washbasin.

We spoke with the host mothers about parenting. The children played freely while the adults enjoyed coffee on the porch. As I tried to calm the children down, concerned about their surroundings, my host advised me to let them be free. I felt that this would lead to their spontaneous human development.

My new insights and discoveries

I realised that I had intervened too much in what my children could do. I understood that children can do a lot of things by themselves. I want to regularly participate in FAMILYINN’s parent-child programme to support my children’s development.

My message and feedback

It was a really great experience. I was able to see the children grow and learn a lot myself. It is difficult for me now to actually live in the countryside, but I would like to participate regularly. I hope this kind of activity will spread more. I would like to participate again. If you don’t plan to spend long holidays in the city and have few opportunities to get in touch with the soil and nature, I would recommend FAMILYINN!
