Why did you decide to do Familyinn?

I had only lived in the city all my life, and because I was in a paid position and could take a large amount of time off, I chose to live in a rural area, which I had never experienced before!

I could do sightseeing after I started work if I had a few days off, but I thought it was the only time I could live like the locals, so I decided to do a homestay.

Why did you use Familyinn?

I found out that Familin allows you to stay in the countryside and rural areas for a long period of time and live with the local people. Since it was a long holiday, I used it because I wanted to have a deeper experience that I wouldn’t normally be able to have.

Did you have any concerns before using Familyinn?

I was vaguely anxious because my friends who are from the countryside and now live in Tokyo told me that I would get bored after a week in the countryside. But in fact, one month was not enough. [Laughs.

The fact that the management of Familin and the hosts contacted me frequently and politely was also something that  made me feel safe.

Why did you decide on Kaga, Ishikawa?

self-sufficient lifestyle, such as a poultry farm, bare  diving and farming.

*Kaga’s most famous bridge.
Unique S-shaped bridge designed by Hiroshi Teshigahara, head of the Sogetsu school.

What did you do during your homestay?

I had a variety of experiences.

One of the most impressive was that I caught, strangled, judged and ate the bird myself, which was the whole process. It was a valuable experience that allowed me to feel how we live once again. I will never forget that day.

I also had many other experiences in contact with nature, such as fishing, picking up rubbish from the sea, logging and campfires.

*The scene at the logging.

The best thing for me was that my hosts introduced me to many of their friends, and I enjoyed eating and drinking with them more than anything else. I was able to learn a lot about the local area and feel again how fun it is to connect with people.

They also had two children, so I got to experience living with their children. It was a valuable experience for me because I never had the opportunity or experience of living with small children, and thanks to them, every day was more enjoyable.

*I played with the children of the homestay families, playing with the plastic rails. The adults had more fun and played with more enthusiasm than the children.

Did you have any problems with your homestay, e.g. transport? What did you do in your spare time?

I also had a bicycle that I could use freely, so I went to the supermarket and the park by myself.
Sometimes people I befriended there would come to pick me up.
In my spare time, I read books and did assignments I wanted to finish before my next job. I also spent a lot of time in the garden in front of my house and in the park, just soaking up the sun.

We heard that your habit in Ishikawa was ‘that would never happen in Tokyo’, please tell us what exactly was not possible.

Yes, in Tokyo, for better or worse, everything can be solved with money, but in Kaga, I was impressed by the way people exchanged things and thoughts, not money.

There were people who helped with logging for free, people who brought us lots of sake, people who gave us cars many times to take us to different places. I thought it was pleasant to see people not asking for anything in return, but just trying to have a good time together, which is a different atmosphere from Tokyo.

*We collected edible grasses from the neighbourhood and cooked them into a tempura dish!

What are your feeling about your  homestay?

Before the homestay, my host told me, “You come here as if you were coming to your uncle’s or aunt’s house”.

In the end, I really felt like a relative and I genuinely wanted to come back to Kaga.

I think this is because the hosts kept giving me many things on a daily basis. They introduced me to all kinds of people, they were generous with their time for me and they really treated me like family, which left the biggest impression on me.

Who would you recommend it to?

I would recommend a homestay at this accommodation to anyone who is considering moving to a rural area or who wants to experience something different from sightseeing. Anyway, you get to experience a lot of things. If you want to rethink the richness of life, it’s a great place to stay.

If you are wondering whether to go or not, go anyway! I’m sure you’ll have a wonderful encounter waiting for you!
